Introduction to Empowerment

Today began with the bibis doing yoga and then some dancing.  All of this was before we began the actual class.  The bibis were very interested in the material which Dickson had translated into swahili.  In fact, they were eager to ask questions about empowerment and ready to give examples from their own lives.  Like many grandparents, they felt less empowered when the children grow older, particularly when they become teenagers.  One bibi was raising 10 grandchildren while 2 were raising 7.  We also gave out the feelings thermometers which were a big hit.  I also presented the class on self-esteem which is something they seemed to be aware of and to already try to foster in the grandchildren.  At the end of the class, they were very excited about the program and anxious to continue with it.
